10 Pittsburgh weekend events, from free art-making at the Warhol to a look at Pittsburgh’s role in moon travel

August is upon us, and there’s a great lineup of Pittsburgh weekend events where you can soak up summer with your family.

Check out everything that’s happening around the city. And f you’re not getting our emails yet, sign up here so you’re privy to everything happening in and around the ‘burgh. Kids ages 5 and younger will enjoy a story reading, followed by free rides on the PNC Carousel. Registration is required.

Friday, Aug.4: Music on the Lawn at SouthSide Works, 6 p.m.

Come on out to SouthSide Works to get your groove on — there’s room to dance and play. Watch boats on the river, bring your pup to the spacious dog park and check out the free arcade games at Pins Mechanical Co. It’s a perfect summer family evening. Find the lineup for all of August here

Friday, Aug. 4 – Sunday, Aug. 6: The Factory at the Warhol, 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Come out to the Warhol (free this month!) for an all-ages hands-on studio event. Kids can silk screen (this ends at 4 p.m.), make souvenirs and learn about Warhol’s work. Find the details here

Saturday, Aug. 5: Moonshot Museum Presents Mission to the Moon at CLP Mt. Washington, 1 p.m.

The space educators at the Moonshot Museum call this event a “high-octane lunar science expedition” as they explore Pittsburgh’s role in lunar exploration. With daring experiments and a science lesson disguised as zany fun, don’t miss this free event. Details can be found here

Saturday, Aug. 5: Latino Community Center’s Back-to-School Bash at the Children’s Museum, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The Children’s Museum hosts the Latino Community Center’s (LCC) Back-to-School Bash on Saturday afternoon. The Back-to-School Bash is the LCC’s annual event celebrating students and families as they enter a new school year. Every student receives a backpack loaded with school supplies, so they can be ready to learn on day one.

Saturday, August 5: Science Bus at CLP Beechview, 2 p.m.

It’s a roving science lab on wheels! Come out to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Beechview location to check out all the experiments and explore the Science Bus — for free. Find the details here. No registration is required. 

Saturday, Aug. 5: Children’s Entrepreneur Market, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

This award-winning program will take place at the North Strabane Community Day Event from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Kids will learn about entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership through hands-on experiences. Kids decide what to sell, create a booth, talk to customers and more. Come check out what the kids have created and find out how you can be a part of it. Details are here

Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6: 260th Anniversary Reenactment at Bushy Run Battlefield

This event is perfect for little history buffs. Come out to Bushy Run Battlefield, located near Jeannette, to learn about this battle that shaped local history. There will be 18th century crafts, reenactors, speakers, and other kid-friendly events. Find the full details here. This event is free. 

Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6: Moraine State Park Regatta

This two-day event is packed with food, swimming, water sports, educational activities, and celebration at Butler County’s largest lake. The event is free, though families pay for food and beverages separately. There will be fly fishing lessons, kayaking lessons and more. Check out the full lineup here

Sunday, Aug. 6: The Link Between Oppenheimer and Shippingport

At the historic Lindsay Theater in Sewickley, nuclear operator Jim Clark will be giving a presentation before a screening of the popular new film “Oppenheimer.” Clark, who is also a docent at the Beaver County Industrial Museum, will explain how Beaver County’s nuclear power plant in Shippingport was the first peacetime application of Oppenheimer’s invention. He will also show photographs on loan from the museum. This event happens at 2:30 p.m. with a showing of the movie directly afterwards. Tickets can be purchased here

Sunday, Aug. 6: Summer Concert Series at Hartwood Acres, 6 p.m. 

The lineup at Hartwood Acres has been jamming all summer. Bring your frisbee and lawn chairs and come check out this weekend’s concert — Soccer Mommy with Disq, two alternative music acts. There are food trucks, wine and beer stands, and an ice cream truck to cool off. The show begins at 7:30. Find details here
