Shop Whole Foods on September 22 and 5% goes to Kidsburgh!

Grocery shopping feels downright generous this month.

Shop to support the Kidsburgh cause Sept. 22 when Whole Foods Market in Shadyside will donate a percentage of sales to benefit the child-friendly organization.

Just in time for the start of school, the Whole Foods Market in Wexford hosted a a 5% Day on Sept. 14, while the organic and natural foods store in Shadyside will host the event on Sept. 22. Kidsburgh will receive 5 percent of that store’s net sales for the day — and we’ll be there to thank you for your support, too.

In an effort to improve childhood nutrition in the United States, Canada and England, the grocer partners with organizations like Kidsburgh to promote the message of healthy eating locally, says Missy Peoples, store team leader from Whole Foods Market.

Whole Foods Market locations hold 5% Days several times per year, and many organizations raise at least $10,000 on these community giving days. Reading is FUNdamental Pittsburgh raised $11,400 in June to support its Storymobile Book Babies program. And last November, Environmental Charter School in Regent Square raised $12,000 with a 5% Day for its middle school Maker+Math project.

“Giving back to our local and global communities is one of Whole Foods Market’s core values and is a guiding principle of our business,” Peoples says. “Our contributions extend beyond nutrition as seen in our ethical trade practices through our Whole Trade program and our Whole Planet Foundation’s work to alleviate poverty worldwide in communities that supply our stores with products through microcredit.”

Whole Foods Market has three charitable foundations, including the Whole Kids Foundation, that contribute to local and global causes.

The funds raised from Kidsburgh’s 5% Day will help to expand this publication’s coverage of children’s health and wellness topics, including the new kid-friendly recipe series.

The grant money will also support Kidsburgh’s mission to make lives better for all Pittsburgh kids, says Kidsburgh Marketing Director Yu-Ling Behr.

“Kidsburgh is a growing and collaborative group that includes parents and anyone working with kids,” Behr says, adding that its advisory board engages representatives from over 20 child-serving organizations who share ideas for editorial consideration. “Kidsburgh is keen to provide positive coverage on health-related issues – from the importance of being physically active to eating a balanced diet to awareness of mental health issues and more.”
