Dive into summer with free swimming for kids at Citiparks pools

As the City of Pittsburgh prepares to open its 18 outdoor swimming pools on June 9, Pittsburgh children have cause to celebrate. In an announcement made Monday, Mayor Peduto and Citiparks committed to providing free pool tags and learn-to-swim lessons for children at all city pools.

“The City of Pittsburgh Aquatic Division offers many programs for people of all ages and swimming abilities and today we’re excited to talk about expanding aquatic opportunities for our youth in particular,” said Mayor Peduto. “This summer, any city resident 15 years or younger who is member of a Citiparks’ Recreation Center will be able to use that pass at a pool for free admission.”

Before receiving free admission at the pools, caregivers must first register their child for a free membership at any one of the Citiparks’ 10 Recreation Centers. City of Pittsburgh residency is required, so don’t forget to bring a valid driver’s license, utility bill or other official document showing your address. Kids should then bring this membership card to the pool each day for entry. Caregivers must pay daily admission rates or purchase a pool tag.

Running from June 22 to July 3, the free learn-to-swim classes will be offered each weekday from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at all city pools. Spots for the classes are limited, and advance registration is required. Caregivers can register their child at each city pool on Saturday, June 6 or Sunday, June 7 from 1 to 6 p.m. or on Monday, June 8 from 4 to 8 p.m.

With free admission and swimming classes, Citiparks will provide new opportunities for Pittsburgh kids to experience both the joy of splashing around on a hot summer’s day and the benefits of learning to swim early in life.
