11 things to do this weekend in Pittsburgh: breakdancing class, a free family fair, fun with animals and more

The first weekend in March is packed full of fun activities as the days get longer and spring creeps up on us. Take in a play, visit the Pittsburgh Home & Garden Show as you ready your outdoor space for nicer weather, or attend a carnival to celebrate the Jewish festival of Purim.

Check out these great family events and things to do this weekend in Pittsburgh:

Thursday, Mar. 2 through Sunday, Mar. 5: Disney on Ice presents “Into the Magic,” various times 

Start the weekend a day early while this show is in town! Come see your kid’s favorite Disney characters – like Elsa, Moana, Mickey and Minnie – take to the ice in a spectacular, colorful show. Tickets start at $26 at PPG Paints Arena.

Friday, Mar. 3 – Sunday, Mar. 5: Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show, various times

The convention center will be packed with vendors, food, train and Lego displays, and a children’s village of activities during this event. The Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show is affordable, too. Adults are $10, Kids 7 and older are $4, and kids 6 and under are free.

Friday, Mar. 3 through Sunday, Mar. 5: “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” various times

On a rainy day in London, four children step through a magical wardrobe — and so it begins. Prime Stage Theater presents the beloved C.S. Lewis story at the New Hazlett Theater, which opens this weekend and runs through next weekend. A sensory-inclusive performance is planned for March 11 and an audio-description show happens on March 12. Tickets start at $18, with a pay-what-you-wish price available on March 3. Learn more here

Saturday, Mar. 4: Let’s Act! Creativity at Play, 10 a.m.

Families can come together in this play-based workshop that uses theater and improvisation games to promote problem-solving, team building, and creative thinking. This event is best for ages 3 and older. Registration is $10 at Trust Arts Education Center.

Saturday, Mar. 4: I Love My Library Family Fair, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Join the crew at the Scottdale Public Library in Westmoreland County to explore their wonderful collection of books, watch puppet shows, play carnival games, and more. This event is free to the public and more details can be found on their Facebook page.

Saturday, Mar. 4: 2023 Summer Camp Expo, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Come to The Landing in Moon Township to chat with camp directors, learn about different programs and find the perfect camp for your kids this summer. In addition to camps, there will be vendors and swag for kids. This event is free, but an Eventbrite registration is required. (Don’t miss Kidsburgh’s summer camp guide, too!)

Saturday, Mar. 4: Allegheny County Park Rangers present Winter Animals, 1 p.m.

How does local wildlife survive the long, cold winters in Pittsburgh? Some move away, some sleep, and some just brave the cold. Join park rangers at this free event, which is best for kids in grades K-5 at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington location

Saturday, Mar. 4: Family Nature Walk at Powdermill Nature Reserve, 2 p.m.

This popular event will fill up fast — the cost is “pay what you can,” so do pre-register at the Powdermill Nature Reserve website. Kids and families of all ages will meet at the atrium at 2 p.m. to begin the guided tour of local flora and fauna.

Saturday, Mar. 4: Sew It With Words, 4 p.m.

Using the embroidery features of the sewing machine, students will create a small pouch or pillow decorated with a mantra or saying of their choice. Some sewing experience is helpful but not required. This event is for ages 14 to adults. Registration is $25 at the Trust Arts Education Center.

Sunday, Mar. 5: Temple Ohav Shalom Purim Carnival, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Join the congregation at Temple Ohav Shalom to celebrate Purim, which marks the triumph of the Jewish people over their Persian captors in the 5th century. Celebrate with food, games and prizes, a bounce house, and more. Tickets start at 2 for $1 and more details can be found on their website

Sunday, Mar. 5: Breakdancing for Kids with Los Sabrosos Dance Co., 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

At these easy, fun classes, students learn the first steps to becoming a breakdancer. Kids can explore new movements gradually as the teacher breaks and shares new skills. Classes can be purchased individually or as a package from Los Sabrosos Dance Company.
