SUMMARY:Steeltown Film Academy (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Steeltown’s Virtual Film Academy is a youth education program in digital media arts and filmmaking held entirely over Zoom. The Academy is open to students that are currently in 9th to 12th grade. \nSteeltown Film Academy (SFA) draws on its partnership with teaching artists and professional mentors to teach a curriculum of the basics of digital media arts – what we like to call SCALE: storytelling\, camera\, audio\, lighting\, and editing. Included in the price of the program is a “film at home” kit (valued at $600) that students will get to keep! Financial assistance is available due to the generous support from foundations and the Pittsburgh community.  \nThe Spring 2022 virtual program runs from January 31st through April 29th 2022\, for three days each week (Monday\, Wednesday and Friday) from 5:00PM-6:30PM\, on Zoom*. Students will be given an additional 3-5 hours of independent project time per week to complete on their own time. Steeltown will not be in session on the following days due to holidays: Monday\, February 22nd (President’s Day)\,  Friday April 15th & Monday April 18th (Easter). \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Program Director\, Mary Ann McBride-Tackett at maryann@steeltown.org. \n*Due to the ever-changing repercussions of COVID-19\, dates and times are subject to change.

Over the course of 4 weeks\, groups of 4th grade students will work with undergraduates from CMU’s College of Engineering to learn about the variety of engineering principles that go into the process of building Rube Goldberg machines. These machines will be constructed using an assortment of household items in conjunction with some supplies that will be provided in mailed kits. All attendees will build their machines at home during the first 3 virtual sessions\, with the final week being reserved for a celebration of everyone’s hard work\, featuring videos of the homemade Rube Goldberg machines in action.

SUMMARY:Steeltown Entertainment Double Feature Movie Club
DESCRIPTION:The Double Feature Movie Club was created to give Steeltown students and teaching artists something positive to look forward to during the height of the pandemic and virtual learning. Both teaching artists and students are eligible to pick a film\, everyone is given a week to watch the films (links are provided). Nominations of films are always welcomed. Nominators of films are expected to provide a brief synopsis (IMDB or Google can be utilized to copy/paste) and 3-4 questions/talking points that you want people to consider while viewing. \nDFMC meets Thursdays from 5:00-6:30pm to discuss and share our opinions on both films\, with nominators helping to guide and lead the conversation (with teaching artist support). \nThis season\, we’ve been choosing films based on sub-genre as a way to expand our film repertoire and expose our students and teaching artists to different types of films and filmmaking. The DFMC continues to be a beacon of excitement for students and staff at Steeltown and we’re hoping to now extend that beacon to all that share our love of film and the art of filmmaking! \nMovie Club is and always will be FREE. We welcome ALL high school level students regardless of background\, education type\, and geographic location. \n*Steeltown is an inclusive and accepting space – people of all races\, genders\, abilities\, and identities are welcomed and their voices valued. Anyone who attends and violates this philosophy will be excused from DFMC indefinitely. Register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ueAr79iMZXCk0OvkHYx-s3wfPnn4I49vEGcqC2JHpgQ/edit
