SUMMARY:Winter Wonderlands and Caroling
DESCRIPTION:Bring everyone in the family and sing your favorite holiday carols with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic at our “Winter Wonderlands and Holiday Caroling Spectacular!” \nThe first half of the program begins our trip to magical winter wonderlands in sound with the overture to Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel. Will the siblings be able to escape an evil witch living in a house made of cake and candy to find their way home? \nThe theme of iconic childhood wintertime fantasies continues with Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. We’ll play all the most famous music from the complete ballet. Accompanying the orchestra’s performance will be a slideshow of images from stagings of the Nutcracker ballet from all around the world. \nVaughan-Williams’ rustic and wintery Fantasia on Greensleeves completes the first half. \nBring your Santa hat and be ready to sing in the second half of the program. Let your cell phone do the singing in the world premiere performance of local composer Ryan McMasters’ [[ chhatter // trrremble ]] for cell phone ensemble and orchestra. By scanning a QR code in the program\, your smartphone becomes part of the performance of this brand new piece inspired by old English carols. \nNext\, we’ll invite you to sing along with traditional and new holiday carols from “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” to “The Christmas Song” (better known as “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”). \nSanta made us promise to play Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride. We’ll all be in the mood for milk and cookies by the end of this festive evening!
