Sponsored Content: Phipps Helps Families Be Champions of Their Own Health!

The internet is a wonderful tool that can connect us in seconds to information, videos, music, friends, family and more! With the vast amount of information right at our fingertips it can be hard to decipher the good information from the not so good. The sixth and final installment of the 5-2-1-0 Speaker Series aims to help families do just that!

Let’s Move Pittsburgh, a program of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, is offering the 5-2-1-0 Speaker Series to help parents, caregivers and community partners interface with children’s health experts on topics related to child health. 5-2-1-0 is a movement to reinforce four healthy lifestyle choices: 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks and more water every day!

Participation in the series is free and open to the public. The sixth and final installment of the popular series, called “Decoding Online Resources,” takes place at the Center for Sustainable Landscapes on Thurs., September 14 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This educational panel session will explain how to find valid information and reliable sources for children’s health tips online.

Moderating the presentation for the September installment is Caroline Passerrello, owner of Caroline West LLC, spokesperson for Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Experts from UPMC Health Plan, National Network of Libraries of Medicine and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will sit on a panel to share where and how to find the best print and digital health related information for you and your family!

Lydia Collins from National Network of Libraries of Medicine will highlight resources such as Med Line Plus and Kids Health, and will also provide helpful tips for evaluating online sources.

Erin Zambataro from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will highlight the library’s website and provide participants with a helpful booklist of wonderful resources for them and their families.

Janine Jones, a UPMC Health Coach and registered dietician, will speak on nutrition and dietary fads to give the audience information on what to trust. Her interactive presentation will get audience members thinking about their personal online research habits.

Before and after the presentations, participants will also have the chance to speak with health professionals from past speaker series sessions and browse helpful resources from the panelist’s organizations. The first 60 registrants who register and attend this special installment will receive a healthy gift from Phipps and Let’s Move Pittsburgh. These networking opportunities will provide caregivers and community partners with new connections and resources for promoting healthy lifestyles.

Interested in attending but need childcare? A free health education session is available for young children ages 2 – 8 while you attend the Speaker Series. For both the speaker series session and childcare, advance registration is required and space is limited. Click here to register today.

Let’s Move Pittsburgh’s 5-2-1-0 Speaker Series is made possible with support from UPMC Health Plan, the Hillman Foundation, and The Heinz Endowments.
