Screen-smart ways to spend more time with your family this summer
Kidsburgh’s event editor Meg St-Esprit paid a visit to our friends at KDKA-TV’s Talk Pittsburgh last week to discuss a subject that’s on many parents’ minds as summer break begins: screen use during summer.
Even as we try to fill the summer with outdoor activities, exercise and fresh air, we know that screens will pop up in the mix as our kids navigate the months of summer break. Meg talked with co-hosts Heather Abraham and Kelly Dzanaj about strategies to make sure screens can help connect family members rather than divide or isolate them throughout the summer.
Among the advice she shared: If your child likes video games, take an interest in really learning about the games they play.
“It would surprise you,” St-Esprit told the KDKA audience. “You would think, ‘Oh gosh, when they’re playing a video game that’s my time to check out and do whatever. But go ask them about what they’re playing. Like, my teenager surprises me with the really complex things he does. Or join in with them.”
Even if your kids will point out how terrible you are at building in Minecraft, the act of engaging with them in a virtual space will create a connection.
