Maker Monday

Maker Monday: Our Top 5 projects

Kids love engaging in Kidsburgh’s Maker Monday projects. Moms love the way busy hands enjoy creating and learning.

Just in case you might have missed a few along the way, we’ve pulled together our Top 5 Maker Monday activities.

The Drawbot

This remarkable Drawbot is a robot that can scribble with markers and make pictures on its own. The supplies can be purchased inexpensively at the Dollar Tree or found at any craft store. Put it together, switch it on, and let it go across a large sheet of paper.

Ping Pong Ball Popper

This project is a blast to make and fun to play with, too. You can create lots of group games with the Ping Pong Ball Popper. Line up friends and see whose ball can shoot the farthest or highest. Take target practice across the yard and record your results. Making Ping Pong Ball Poppers would be a great diversion for a birthday party or family picnic. Don’t be surprised if grownups want to play, too.maker monday

DIY Lava Lamp

Oil and water don’t mix — except when you combine them in fun S.T.E.A.M. projects like this DIY Lava Lamp. Create this project and watch its hypnotic rising blobs of color. The science behind the magic comes from the fact that water is denser than oil. The evidence is seen in how the oil floats on top of the layer of water. Once you drop a piece of the effervescent tablet into the bottle, and it sinks to the bottom, you can see carbon dioxide being released in the form of tiny bubbles. As the carbon dioxide gas rises through the layers of water and oil, it pushes colored bubble blobs to the surface.mm-beads

Paper Beads

You can make stylish Paper Beads in a multitude of colors and patterns with simple steps and easily accessible materials. As a Maker Monday project, these paper beads help develop small motor skills, promote problem-solving, and provide a creative outlet for budding artists and crafters. Don’t worry if your wrapping paper is left over from Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or a baby shower. Once you make the bead, the paper creates such a unique pattern that you cannot discern the original paper design. maker monday

Recycled Bag Jump Rope

This project gives a lesson in re-using and re-purposing objects that end up getting tossed. Our Recycled Bag Jump Rope is a fun activity in itself. Using your jump rope to play with friends provides an outlet for burning energy and keeping fit. Depending on where Mom and Dad shop, you can mix and match different colors. The rope can be made to fit as long or as short as it needs to be. The supplies needed are minimal and readily available in most households.
