Maker Monday

Maker Monday: Let’s try sorting

Hello Kidsburgh families. We’re back with another fun and easy “Let’s Try” Maker Monday activity, courtesy of our creative friends at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

This activity is a bit different from the craft projects we normally post each week. Rather than creating a finished projects, young kids can learn about counting, shapes and colors by sorting all different kinds of items you might have around the house.

What items can you find around your house that kids can sort by size, color and shape? Follow along with this video to see what’s possible.

A note to kid makers that we include with all our activities: Please work with a parent or caregiver on every project and always be very careful when using tools of any kind.

Maker Monday materials you’ll need:

  • spare buttons or any other group of similar items you might have

Instructions:

  • Encourage your child to sort the items by color. How many colors can they find?
  • If you’re sorting buttons, now try sorting by the number of holes they have (including zero!). How many different types are there, and are there a lot that are the same type?
  • Now try sorting things by size! How much bigger is the biggest thing compared to the smallest thing?
  • What other ideas can you come up with?
