Kid events in Pittsburgh: January

One of our goals at Kidsburgh is to offer the best of local family-friendly events in the most user-friendly format. So in addition to our events calendar — which features great kid events in Pittsburgh every day of the month — we’re now adding a monthly article directing you to ongoing events–say those running a week or more. Here are some great events you won’t want to miss in January .

Extended hours at the Heinz History Center:WWII-Thumbnail

The Heinz History Center will remain open until 8 p.m. January 4 through 10 so guests can enjoy the last of their We Can Do It! WWII exhibit, which closes on January 10. And don’t miss the Kaufmann’s/Macy’s Holiday Display, commemorating the legacy of the holiday window, which continues right through January.

The Wizard of Oz: A stage adaptation of the beloved and magical MGM film by PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh, The Wizard of Oz will run from January 3 through 11 at Heinz Hall. Suitable for all ages. $31-$72.

JunieBJan2016Junie B’s Essential Guide to School: A production of the Citizen’s Bank Children’s Theater Series, Junie B’s Essential Guide to School is a musical based on Barbara Park’s popular book series. Junie B and her friends will explain everything your young scholar needs to know about going to school, in a fun and entertaining way. Performances run from January 10 through 17 at the Byham Theater and a selection of school venues. Suitable for 3-8 year-olds. $10.50 in advance/$12 at the door.

Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show:

A new display of orchids and tropical bonsai opens at the Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens on January 16 and runs through February 29. Kids can play farmer’s market and enjoy the Garden Railroad, while everyone will appreciate the beautiful colors of Phipps. Included in regular admission. See more about Phipps below.

MLK Day @ Children’s Museum:

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s Birthday with three days of special programming at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, January 16-18. Included in regular admission.

New Pterosaurs Exhibit:Homepage_Pterosaurs

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History presents a new exhibit certain to engage kids. Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, starting January 30. Pterosaurs explores creatures that were both avian and reptilian, but classified neither as birds nor as dinosaurs. Enjoy fossils, life-size models and hands-on activities. Included in regular admission.

Catch these seasonal activities and exhibitions before they close:

Winter Flower Garden and Light Show and Candlelit Evenings: Extended hours, from 5 until 11 p.m., continue at the Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens until January 10. Enjoy holiday lights, hot chocolate and your winter dose of green. Included in regular admission.

Voyage to VietnamHeader_Vietnam:

The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh hosts the exhibit Voyage to Vietnam: A Celebration of the Tet Festival until January 17. Here’s your chance to celebrate the Vietnamese New Year’s Festival, Tet, with a hands-on, cross-cultural exploration. Included with the price of regular admission.

Wintergarden and MassMutual Ice Rink @ PPG Place:

The annual Spirits of Giving Around the World and Gingerbread House and Train Exhibits remain open at PPG Place‘s Wintergarden, weekdays 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. through January. Enjoy the bright, warm indoors and then go skating at the newly expanded outdoor rink, open through February 28. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for kids and seniors and $4 for skate rental.  For hours of operation and additional info, see here.
