From Open Streets to free carousel rides: Check out your weekend guide for July 25-27

This final weekend in July is packed with events big and small! Whether your family is still full of energy this summer or needs a bit of rest and relaxation, there’s an event that is just right for your needs.
There’s still lots of time left this summer for water play, too. Don’t miss our guides to pools, spray parks, and the region’s waterways. While you’re at it, check out our guide to water safety with kids.

Thursday, July 24: Mad About the Movies at Heinz Hall, 7 p.m.
Start the weekend off early with conductor Jacob Joyce and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for a perfect summer evening of your favorite musical hits, including iconic themes from movies like “Harry Potter,” “E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “Cinema Paradiso,” from composers like Mozart, Beethoven and John Williams. Tickets start at $25.
Friday, July 25: Baby and Me Yoga at Schenley Plaza, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Join in a yoga class designed for you and your little one. Yoga mats and lunch provided, plus giveaways. Designed for ages 3 and younger. Registration is free but required. (Looking for more family yoga fun? Check out our guide.)
Friday, July 25: Free Carousel Rides at Schenley Plaza, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
National Carousel Day, celebrated each year on July 25, marks the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for the modern carousel — granted in 1871. It’s a day to honor the history, craftsmanship and nostalgic charm of carousels that have brought joy to generations. The Parks Conservancy will be offering free rides on the PNC Carousel, one of the city’s most treasured landmarks. Check with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy for more information.
Friday, July 25: Summer Fridays at The Frick, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Bring a blanket and some chairs for a free evening of family fun. The Stemtecs Band performs covers and originals, bringing a vibrant mix of smooth and jazzy melodies. From jazz to pop and R&B to smooth jazz, The Stemtecs Band delivers an experience that showcases their unique sound and deep musical connection. In addition to live music, there will be food trucks, art-making and family fun on the beautiful Frick lawns. The Museum Store will remain open until 6 p.m. and the Grable Visitor Center will be open for restroom access until 8 p.m. The Frick Art Museum and the Car and Carriage Museum will not be open during Summer Fridays. Saturday, July 26: Kid of STEEL Track Day, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join Kids of STEEL Track Day at the P3R Track & Field Complex, located at the RMU Island Sports Center. This free youth event is an opportunity for children ages 5-13 to have fun and test their skills on the track this summer. All participants will receive a pair of Brooks socks. Track events will include the 50M, 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, and 1-mile. This is the perfect event for kids who want to experience their first ever track event and also those who want to put their speed to the test by being officially timed. Participants will be divided by gender and age to allow for more competitive races. Inflatables and other fun activities will be set up on the infield for youth to enjoy either before or after they have competed. Find more details about this free event here.

Saturday, July 26: Pathways to the Past and The Canadian Millice Fur Trade, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pathways to the Past is an immersive program for Braddock’s Battlefield History Center visitors to learn more about the lives of everyday people in the mid-18th century. The fur trade was one of the many contributing factors of the French/British conflict in western Pennsylvania in the mid-18th century. Historical interpreter Jake Kirsch will share his knowledge of the Canadian Milice (militia) and the French fur trade, giving us a better understanding of the French combatants of the Battle of the Monongahela, and the lives of the colonists of New France. This event costs $4 to $17 and more info can be found here.

Sunday, July 27: Galactic Family Adventure Day at Riverview Park, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Family Days continues with a day dedicated to outer space that includes the Moonshot Museum and the Allegheny Observatory for an exciting lineup of fun and learning. Observatory tours begin at 6 p.m. Relax on the lawn at dusk for a screening of “Woman in Motion,” a documentary film that explores actress Nichelle Nichols’ daunting task to launch a national recruitment blitz for NASA. All Family Day events are free.

Saturday, July 26: KIDZ BOP LIVE BOP Tour, 7 p.m.
This event, at the Capital Theatre in Wheeling, is just about an hour’s drive from Pittsburgh. This high-energy concert is the ultimate live music experience for kids (and their grown-ups!) featuring family-friendly versions of today’s biggest pop hits, including “espresso,” “HOT TO GO,” and “Dance Monkey.” Tickets begin at $35

Sunday, July 27: Open Streets PGH, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Enjoy four hours of car-free streets while your family bikes, scoots, or dances their way through the Strip District. Don’t miss the entertainment, fun, food, and street art (like Squonk’s Giant Purple Hands). Find the full schedule here!
Sunday, July 27: Car Cruise at Boyce Park, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Got a kiddo who loves old cars? This cruise is the perfect chance to see some unique vehicles from our area. Expect music, local food trucks, Mike Frazer from 3WS radio, plus plenty of unique cars and antique vehicles. This event is free.
