With more than 200 hands-on learning events for families happening this month, it can be hard to choose which to attend — especially since nearly all of them are free. One option is to visit the Remake Learning Days website and search by learning theme. Each event is tagged with one or more of the festival’s themes: arts, maker, science, technology, youth voice and outdoor learning.

Springtime weather is finally here, so it’s a great time to dive into outdoor learning adventures with kids of all ages. Here are just a few of the more than two dozen events on tap in the Pittsburgh region:

May 11, 4 p.m., Future Gardeners of Indiana County: Join the Indiana County Conservation District to learn the basics of backyard gardening, get hands on experience in one of Indiana’s newest community gardens, and leave with your own seed start kit and a plan to set your own garden into action. All are welcome.

May 12, 10 a.m., Farmer Friday: Tour Oakleigh Farm, a robotic dairy farm with Matt: After a fire in 2019, Matt and his family decided to rebuild their barn with a focus on robotic technology that increases efficiency and cow comfort at the dairy farm. During the tour, kids ages 5 through 10 are invited to learn where calves and cows live, and how cows are milked.

May 13, 8 a.m., World Migratory Bird Day: Visit the Frick Environmental Center to celebrate the diversity of birds that live among us with hikes, crafts, and other activities for learners of all ages in this collaborative event from the Allegheny Bird Conservation Alliance, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Pittsburgh Park Rangers, and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Activities for learners of all ages, from fledgling to adult, will teach ways to appreciate and help the birds in our backyards.

May 13, 10:30 a.m., Science in the City: Visit Carnegie Science Center to get the 4-1-2 on how science fuels the ‘Burgh! Enjoy interactive floor demonstrations on pH, civil engineering, and space technology

May 17, 3:30 p.m., Kids Club – Seeds & Gardens: Visit the Carnegie Library in Brookline for this free Kids Club event with a focus on outdoor learning.

May 18, 5 p.m., It Takes a Neighborhood: This powerful event for parents/caregivers, kids and teachers is happening at the Fred Rogers Center in Latrobe. Folks from the Fred Rogers Institute, in partnership with WQED Education and Latrobe Art Center, will share about intentionally building learning neighborhoods and ecosystems of support around children. This discussion will focus on cultivating relationships between those who support children at home, at school, and during out of school time. Kids will be welcome to join in an interactive, hands-on gardening experience to learn about the environment and explore ideas of stewardship and kindness in this activity.
