Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is here and for many Pittsburgh-area families, it’s a special time of year. This national celebration began in 1977 as a weeklong event and by 1990 it was proclaimed by President George H. W. Bush as a month-long observance.
Since then, it has brought cultural events throughout the nation each year during the month of May.
Here in the Pittsburgh area, there are so many fun events happening all month long. Check out these offerings:
Carnegie Library events: The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has a ton of great AANHPI-related events this month. From Japanese kite making and Indian rangoli painting to the polka-dot art of Yayoi Kusama, you can search all of CLP’s events right here.
And don’t miss CLP’s Teen Time-Celebrity Stickers event during Remake Learning Days, where families can learn to use the app Procreate to create stickers of Asian-American/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander celebrities.
Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh: The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History will be hosting an Asian American-Native Hawaiian-Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration on Sunday, May 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., which is free with museum admission. The event includes guided tours, activities and performances.
Heinz History Center’s Taste of Asia: One of the most delicious events of the year is the Taste of Asia celebration happening on Sunday, May 11, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Included with History Center admission, this cultural and culinary journey highlights Asian American contributions of the past and present in Pittsburgh.
