7 things to do this weekend in Pittsburgh with kids, including baseball, bison and a massive block party

Is it really Labor Day weekend already? Say goodbye to summer and celebrate the arrival of fall at one of the many family-friendly events happening around the Pittsburgh area. Check out this lineup of things to do this weekend in Pittsburgh with kids:

Friday, Aug. 26: Gene the Werewolf with special guest The Ghost Club in concert at South Park Amphitheater, 7 p.m.

On Friday night, South Park hosts Gene the Werewolf with special guest The Ghost Club for the final weekend of Allegheny County’s free 2022 Summer Concert Series. The show begins at 7 p.m., but families usually arrive early to enjoy a full evening out. Bring a blanket and picnic basket or grab some dinner at the on-site food trucks.

Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4: End of Summer Block Party, Children’s Museum campus, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day

The Children’s Museum and MuseumLab send a farewell to summer with a weekend of free outdoor activities. The neighborhood block party will draw fun-loving families to two days of excitement. Groups like Assemble, Sensory Super Powers and Kente Arts will offer activities. Browse booths with fare from Minimo Jewelry, Olesya Fashion Boutique and Forlorn Moon Clothing. No registration is required for the outdoor celebration, but visiting the Children’s Museum or MuseumLab requires paid admission.

Saturday, Sept. 3: “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” marathon of fan-favorite episodes on WQED, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

The “Daniel Tiger” TV series is 10 years old! This weekend, you and your little ones can watch the “Top Ten Tiger Tales,” a five-hour marathon showcasing 10 fan-chosen episodes from over the years. These will  include the very first story, “Daniel’s Birthday,” along with older episodes like “The Baby is Here” and “Daniel Visits the Doctor,” and newer favorites like “Daniel’s New Friend Max.” Get all the details about Daniel’s anniversary celebration right here.

Sunday, Sept. 4: Race to Beat Women’s Cancers – 5k Run/Walk, 8:30 a.m. to noon

The 2nd annual Race to Beat Women’s Cancers (RBWC) 5K Run/Walk will happen in North Park on Sunday. Runners and walkers alike are invited to celebrate survivors, providers and researchers, and bring hope to all those affected by women’s cancers, including breast, ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers. The organizers tell us that your participation in the RBWC will help improve cancer care through support for patient programming, raising funds that stay in Pittsburgh while fueling scientific research with global reach.

Sunday, Sept. 4: Explore Bison with the Park Rangers, South Park, 10 a.m. to noon 

No need to travel all the way to Yellowstone to encounter bison. Allegheny County Park rangers offer families the opportunity to learn more about the herd that lives in South Park. Hands-on opportunities will be available at the exploration table. Join guided walks at the game preserve scheduled for 10 and 11 a.m. to get a good look at these majestic beasts. Explore Bison with the Park Rangers is free, but registration is suggested. This one is truly unique among the things to do this weekend in Pittsburgh with kids!
