10 weekend events for Pittsburgh kids: Lots of springtime and Easter fun!

This weekend is the first one in April, Easter weekend, and Passover week — meaning there’s a lot happening! You may have plans with family or friends, but if you’re looking for something to do, we’ve got some great options.

Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4: Eggstravaganza at the National Aviary, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hop on over to the National Aviary for a spring celebration. Guests will have an egg-cellent time exploring the Aviary’s immersive habitats on a themed scavenger hunt. Experience a fun and engaging story time, get crafty and so much more. This event is included with aviary admission.

Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4: Fun Slides Blacklight Easter Egg Hunt, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Did you know the world’s only carpet skate park is located right here in the North Hills of Pittsburgh? Come out for some blacklight fun. There will be egg hunting, skating and sliding, plus photos with the big bunny himself. The cost is $25. Find more info here.

Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4: Bunny Trolley at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This weekend, come on out to the Trolley Museum and hunt for giant Easter eggs hidden along the landscape during trolley rides. Take a break and enjoy a sweet treat, meet some live bunnies, and make crafts. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the event, but the bunny will return to his burrow at 4 p.m. Tickets start at $22, kids 2 and under are free.

Saturday, April 4: Bird Scavenger Hunt at The Frick Pittsburgh, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As part of their programming during PPS’s spring break, The Frick is offering a scavenger hunt on their lovely grounds. Explore the outdoors while peeping birds, learning about Pittsburgh history, and enjoying spring weather. This event is included with museum admission. Check “Today at The Frick” to see what’s happening each day of spring break (or at any time). The museum regularly hosts family-friendly events centered around art and history.

Saturday, April 4: Maker Lab Fun with Fuzzy Perler Beads at Penn Hills Library, 1:30 p.m.

Calling all Junior Makers to the library to check out a new craft. Maker Lab activities teach kids how to use different machines and supplies to create something completely new. This week, they will explore fuzzy Perler Beads. This event is designed for children in grades K through 5th. Please register here or by calling the library at 412-775-4700.

Saturday, April 4: Animal Encounters at Schenley Park Visitors Center, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Stop by at any time during the open hours for a live animal meet and greet presented by local wildlife rescues and other local partners. This Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy drop-in program is free and reservations are not required. If this weekend is busy for your family, no worries: This same event will happen again at the same time, same place on April 17.

Saturday, April 4: Squonk’s Rube Goldberg Workshop at CLP Beechview, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Unleash your creativity with Rube Goldberg Machines and Squonk. Join Squonkers for an exciting workshop where science meets art. Kids aged 6-13 will dive into the world of Rube Goldberg Machines, learning how to harness the flow of energy, using everyday objects, to create quirky, complex contraptions with chain reactions. Don’t miss out on this chance to build, play and explore. This event is free and you can find more info right here

Saturday, April 4-Sunday, April 5: Jurassic Quest at the Monroeville Convention Center

This three-day event brings dinosaurs to life with robotic marvels that growl, roar, hiss and interact with the audience. There is also less-scary fun at this event, including a fossil dig, bounce houses and more. There are accommodations for visitor with disabilities that can be found here. Tickets begin at $30.

Sunday, April 5: Bunny Family Fun Cruise with the Gateway Clipper Fleet

Enjoy great music and dancing as the DJ plays the “Bunny Hop” and other fun songs. Kids will receive a special treat from the Easter Bunny, and there are snacks available for purchase. Two cruises set sail, at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $35, $20 for ages 3-12, $5 for ages 2 and younger.

Sunday, April 5: Noche De Ciencias STEM Event at CMU, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Noche de Ciencias is a free, hands-on STEM event for K–12 students and their families hosted by SHPE at Carnegie Mellon University. The event is designed to introduce students to science, technology, engineering, and math through fun, interactive activities such as LED light-up cards, wind turbines, biomedical sensors, coding logic, and more. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where students and families can explore STEM together and learn more about opportunities in these fields. Find details here.
