10 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend, from the Dormont Street & Music Festival to the Hispanic Heritage Festival

Fall is in full swing here in Pittsburgh, and as Hurricane Ian moves on, this upcoming weekend looks delightfully sunny and crisp. Check out all these great things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend:

Friday, Oct. 7: Trick-or-Treating with VolunTOTS, 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Put on your cutest costume and join VolunTOTS and VolunTYKES as they trick or treat at Lowrie Place! Please RSVP to cami@voluntotspgh.org to help give an accurate headcount for candy. If you’re not familiar with VolunTOTS and VolunTYKES, their mission is to engage children and families in age-appropriate volunteer opportunities. (Get all the details here.) All children will go home with a book as a thank you from the residents at Lowrie Place. 

Friday, Oct. 7 – Sunday, Oct. 9: Renshaw Farms Pumpkin Fest, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

This affordable farm festival is located in Freeport and has a hay tunnel, giant hay pile, animals, mini golf, and more. The farm store is full of delicious treats, as well. Admission is $7 per person, but kids 3 and under are free. This event is cash-only and runs the rest of the weekends of October. 

Saturday, Oct. 8: Festival of Combustion, 1 p.m. – 9 p.m.

This festival is on fire – literally. At the Carrie Blast Furnace, Rivers of Steel hosts this hands-on learning event that is all about burning things. This afternoon will be lit – from glassblowing and metal work to actually firing up the historic Carrie blast furnace. Adults are $20, but kids are free. Details here

Saturday, Oct. 8: Fall Fest at The Woodlands, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Join The Woodlands as they celebrate fall and share their program with the community. This event includes a pumpkin patch, the Not So Haunted Trail, an antique tractor parade, a costume contest, crafts for all ages, yard games, trick or treating, and more. This event is free and open to the public. Food trucks will be onsite.

Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9: Drive-in movies at Allegheny County Parks, at dusk

Allegheny County Parks host two family film favorites that add more silly than thrilly this month. Catch “Hotel Transylvania” (PG) on Oct. 7 at Hartwood Acres Amphitheater and Oct. 8 at Settlers Cabin Park. Admission is free. Details here

Saturday, Oct. 8: Dormont Street & Music Festival, 1 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Three stages will rock Dormont all afternoon and evening this weekend during this fun festival. Listen to all types of music and let your kids dance in the streets. Dormont Recreation Board is hosting a Kidzone on Glenmore Avenue featuring GoExploreCreate public art project and a Dormont Fire Department truck as well as a 30-foot rock wall presented by the Pennsylvania National Guard. Admission is free.

Saturday, Oct. 8: Mount Lebanon Junior Women’s Club Trunk or Treat, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

If you’re looking for a candy-filled event that involves less hill climbing than traditional Pittsburgh trick-or-treating, this trunk-or-treat is a great choice. There’s a suggested donation of $5 per kid or $10 total per family, if you’re able. The Kona Ice truck will be available, too – so bring your reusable cups for a discount! 

Saturday, Oct. 8: Hispanic Heritage Festival, 2 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Come to PNC Park for the first-ever Hispanic Heritage Festival. Pittsburgh has a growing Hispanic and Latinx population, and Emiliano’s Restaurant and Bar is kicking off Latinx Heritage Month with face painting, sugar skull decorating, and live music. Of course, there will also be food. There are a variety of ticket packages available, depending on how long you want to stay. 

Saturday, Oct. 8: Campfire Ghost Stories, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Join Josh & Gab as they tell kid-friendly ghost stories at Harrison Hills Park in Natrona Heights. Storytellers will gather at the Yakaon shelter, so dress warm for this fun storytelling experience.

Sunday, Oct. 9: Young Eagles Day at Butler Regional Airport, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Has your child, ages 8-17, wanted to fly in an airplane with a real pilot? At Young Eagles Day, they can do so. The event is free, but pre–registration is required. If this date doesn’t work for you, check their website. Pilots volunteer hours many different weekends at regional airports.
