Maker Monday: Monster Bookmark

Have fun hitting the books with this back-to-school Maker Monday activity. Monster Bookmarks will incite a giggly smile each time a book is opened.

The origami portion of the project helps develop nimble fingers and follow-the-directions logic. Then, creativity takes over with a world of possibilities in making a personalized monster face.

Supplies:

Square paper (origami paper works best)

Construction paper

Markers

Scissors

Glue stick or school glue

Fold the square paper in half, corner to corner, to make a triangle.

Fold the two points of the triangle to the center point.

Open back to a triangle and fold the top of the triangle inside, meeting the fold lines. The back of the triangle remains pointing up.

Refold the two sides and tuck inside. This is the basic bookmark, which will slip easily over the corner of a page.

Now you can decorate your bookmark with abandon. Cut a square slightly smaller than the bookmark square and glue inside. Cut out eyes, hair, pointy teeth, or a long scary tongue from construction paper and glue in place. Your Monster Bookmark can be as silly or creepy as you wish.

Start reading and use the bookmark to hold your place.
