Pittsburgh Cares Youth Advisory Council could empower your teen

Whether they’re painting murals in their schools, reaching out to the homeless or organizing a dodge ball tournament to fight juvenile diabetes, members of the Pittsburgh Cares Youth Advisory Council (YAC) rise to the challenge of addressing the city’s needs. And with the 2015-2016 YAC application deadline rapidly approaching, the organization is searching for its next crop of young changemakers.

“The amount of adult voices about issues affecting our nation and communities is overwhelming,” says Chris Lehberger, senior program manager at Pittsburgh Cares. “Do you know who we aren’t hearing from? Young people.” The YAC not only gives kids this voice, but also a mechanism to actually make a difference in their communities. In a nutshell, it’s empowering.

Lehberger views the kids on the council as wise, insightful and ready for all of the challenges that lie ahead for their generation. The best part about them? “What you see is what you get,” he says. “When you’re talking with them, you see that where they’re coming from with regard to social issues is incredibly pure.”

And now Lehberger is looking for the next group of teen council members. Applicants must be Pittsburgh residents in grades 9-12 with an ability to devote four hours per week to YAC, including attending monthly meetings and participating in regular volunteer projects. In return, council members get personal and professional development opportunities and recommendations for higher education and employment.

The application deadline for new members is June 12. And this year, like all years, things will be a little bit different. “Every year it changes,” adds Lehberger. “We always try new things based on the kids’ ideas and what they’re passionate about.” And that means that YAC members are gaining the education, experience and confidence they need to go from caring—to doing.
